The Genius Loci
The design of the new St Anne (Stanley) Primary School building is deeply rooted in the concept of Genius loci, reflecting the spirit and heritage of both the school and its surrounding community. For generations, St Anne (Stanley) has served as a cornerstone of the Old Swan area, nurturing children and supporting families. The school’s legacy of education and inclusivity has shaped the neighbourhood, making it an integral part of local identity.
The selected site for the new building embodies the area’s rich history and evolving character. Situated on land formerly used as a fruit and vegetable market, and facing the longstanding fish market, the location draws upon the traditions of community gathering and trade that have defined Old Swan for decades. These markets have been essential meeting points and symbols of local resilience, and their presence continues to evoke a strong sense of belonging among residents.

By positioning the new school in this context, the design aims to honour these foundational elements while creating a vibrant, forward-looking environment for future generations. The adjacent site, earmarked for new residential development, provides an exciting opportunity for St Anne (Stanley) to become the “seed” of a new community, bridging the established traditions of the area with the aspirations of incoming families. The school will stand not only as a place of learning, but as a connector between past and present, helping Old Swan to grow, adapt, and preserve its unique spirit for years to come.
