Words of the week – we are introducing our children to new vocabulary every week. These words will be sent home on a weekly basis. Please ask your child what they mean and encourage them to use them as often as possible when speaking.

Please encourage your child to read a few pages of their reading book every night. We love to read in our school and believe ‘The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go’

AUTUMN TERM Y4 SCHOOL DIARY

We start each day in year 4 with a lovely breakfast and a practise our English Basic Skills. These sessions consist of spelling, punctuation and grammar activities and cover a wide range of skills. It is really important that your child is in school on time as we revise a lot of skills in these sessions but there is also a lot of new leaning taking place at this time.

Geography

In our Geography lessons this half term, we have been learning abut the River Rhine and the Mediterranean Sea. We have been learning and using lots of new subject specific vocabulary and completed a lot of interesting activities.

History

This half terms History topic is The Roman Republic. We are really enjoying learning all about Romulus and Remus and the legend of how Rome began. We have learnt so much about the Punic Wars and some of the Generals and leaders.

In our English lesson we are reading a fantastic book titled ‘Christophe’s Story’ by Nicki Cornwell. We are really enjoying examining the text and have based a lot of our written work around it. We have enjoyed some lovely drama lessons were we practised how to empathise with a character. We then used this to help us write a diary entry.

In Art we have learnt so many new skills and already produced some fabulous pieces of art work. We have researched the artist Barbara Hepworth and produced soap sculptures in the style of her work. We have also learn about the history of the Willow patter and designed our own Willow pattern plates.

We have done a lot of fun lessons in maths! We have looked at partitioning and flexible partitioning of numbers, place value, Roman Numerals, comparing numbers and addition and subtraction. We have also had a lot of discussions about different strategies we can use. Each table has a maths basket on that is full of resources that can support is in our maths.

In ICT we have been learning all about branching data bases. We have learnt how to use them and also how to create our own. This is very useful in our Science lessons. We have also been working hard on improving our typing skills. We are using a really effective programme called ‘dance mat typing’ and we are already seeing an improvement in our typing skills and speed.
