October 2016

What a fantastic first half term we have had! We are definitely ready for a lovely week off after working super hard and having loads of fun. The past few weeks have had a bit of a pyjama theme!!

We have been having swimming lessons at Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree. For one of our lessons we learned water safety and we had to wear our pyjamas in the water!!! It was so much fun!

Then on the last day of term, to celebrate how hard we have all been working, we had a pyjama party in the classroom! We played pass the parcel, musical bumps and musical statues. What a lovely celebration!

In English, we are currently reading ‘Storm’ by Kevin Crossley Holland. The story is very gripping and we are constantly making new predictions about what we think might happen next. Recently, we have explored a dilemma in the story. Annie, the main character, has a very important decision to make. Will she brave the marsh during a storm in order to go and fetch a doctor to help her sister who is in labour? Or will she stay at home where it is safe?

We agreed that there are pros and cons to both choices, and used the ‘conscience alley’ drama activity to explore this further. One side shouted reasons why Annie should stay at home, and the other side shouted reasons why she should go through the marsh. This activity really helped us to identify with Annie and to see both points of view.

Then we had a go at writing Annie persuasive letters to help her to make the right decision. Here is some of our best work!

We are really enjoying reading this story and we are desperate to find out what happens next!

Our history topic this half term is all about the Stone Age. We are really looking forward to our trip to Liverpool World Museum where we will be able to look at artefacts and find out even more exciting information! So far we have really enjoyed learning about some of the Neolithic cave paintings which have only been discovered in the past 100 years or so. We were really inspired by some of photographs we saw of these caves, and had a go at creating our very own cave paintings for our class display.

We have made a great start to Year 3! We love our new classroom and we’re looking forward to all the new things we’re going to learn this year…

One of our challenges this year is to learn our 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We have special beanstalks which record our progress. Some of us are getting really quick at recalling multiplication facts out of order and division facts too!
