Literacy is central to children’s development across the whole curriculum.  A systematic programme of teaching and learning ensures that each child reaches their potential in speaking and listening, reading and writing. As a school we strive to ensure that work in ‘speaking and listening’, ‘reading’ and ‘writing’ is integrated.  Our aim is for all children to learn to speak confidently and listen to what others have to say.  They begin to read and write independently and with enthusiasm.  They use language to explore their own experiences and imaginary worlds.

Children need to secure knowledge, understanding and skills in decoding and comprehension in reading and in composition, transcription, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation in writing. There is a key focus on the ‘Immerse, Analyse, Write’ teaching sequence to ensure that children have opportunities to practise the key skills whilst building the understanding and knowledge to apply these skills across a range of genres.

The Primary Strategy objectives are used by all staff to ensure progression from Year 1 to Year 2 and beyond, essentially building on from the Early Learning Goals achieved in Nursery and Reception.

Speaking and Listening: Children work in small groups and as a class, joining in discussions and making relevant points.  They also learn how to listen carefully to what other people are saying, so that they can remember the main points.  They learn to use language in imaginative ways and express their ideas and feelings when working in role and in drama activities.

Reading: Children’s interest and pleasure in reading is developed as they learn to read confidently and independently.  They focus on words and sentences and how they fit into the whole texts.  They work out the meaning of straightforward texts and say why they like them or do not like them.  Children are taught the knowledge, skills and understanding through a range of literature (including stories, plays and poems) and non-fiction and non-literacy texts (including print and ICT-based information texts, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and other reference materials). A range of Reading Schemes ie Ginn 360, Bug Club and Oxford Reading Tree are used to teach reading skills (as appropriate) and books are sent home on a daily basis.  Children can also choose a class library book to enhance their reading for pleasure.

The Letters and Sounds phonic programme is taught daily within all classes ensuring children are ready for higher level reading and writing in KS2.

Writing: Our aim is for children to begin to enjoy writing and see the value of it.  They learn to communicate meaning in narrative and non-fiction texts and spell and punctuate correctly.  Knowledge, skills and understanding include; composition, planning and drafting, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, presentation, the grammatical features of written Standard English and language structure. These are taught through addressing a range of purposes, readers and forms of writing.
